USMC INDIAN WARS M-1874 TYPE II MEAT TIN CA. INDIAN WARS. Rarely encountered, the Type II Mess kit differed from the type III (more commonly encountered) in that the carrying ring is centered w/ the closure/ pan handle in the middle of the ring when assembled (Type II). The type III has carrying ring offset so when assembled the closure/ pan handle is to the side of the ring. Ratio of observed #2’s to #3’s would be about 1 to 100. This example is stamped “U.S./M.C.” on the closure/ pan handle where only “U.S.” is generally encountered. Exc cond w/ original tin plating turned drab; 8-1/2” oval design; 1-1/2” deep. When disassembled forms mess plate and pan w/ handle. This is the only U.S.M.C. example known. Very rare.
